The public is invited to bring their pets to this celebration of St. Francis’ love for all of God’s creation. The blessing of animals is a tradition that originated in the 13th century in remembrance of St. Francis.

 All pets are required to be leashed or secured for the safety of the animals and other participants.

It’s time for Good Neighbors to Geaux Green! Fifth-grade students at participating West Monroe elementary schools and sixth-grade students at participating Monroe elementary schools are competing in the Geaux Green Recycling Contest, and the entire community is invited to help them win!

The contest is designed to teach an important lesson: Don’t litter—and take the next step by recycling! Students are collecting #1 plastic drinking bottles and turning something that could become litter into something that can be recycled.

All #1 plastic drinking bottles are accepted. Bottles should be empty, clean, and dry. Please do not smash the bottles. Leave them intact so they can be collected and measured properly.

Area residents who want to make a difference are invited to a recruitment meeting to be held by a service group that itself is making an award-winning difference in the lives of others.

Ruston's Zeta Rho chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International will host its annual recruitment and welcome meeting at 6 p.m. Oct. 6 in the fellowship hall of the Northside Church of Christ, 1804 N. Trenton St. A light supper will be provided, followed by a presentation on "Making a Difference" that highlights projects and activities of the group.

Both men and women are eligible to join, said President Beth Fife, whose husband, Lester, serves as Zeta Rho-ESA treasurer.

Suzy Gardunio, vice president and membership chair, added, "We hope people who are looking for friendship, fun and an opportunity to serve others will come see what Zeta Rho-ESA is all about."

The group's projects include volunteering with the Monroe St. Jude Dream Home, co-hosting the KXKZ 107.5 St. Jude Radiothon and assisting with local St. Jude trike-a-thons. Members also participate in activities supporting Christian Community Action, local Special Olympics, Easterseals and area veterans. In addition, members enjoy educational programs at monthly meetings as well as a variety of social gatherings.

The chapter often garners both state and international recognition for its work, and the past few months have added to those honors.

Every Tuesday evening, the Jazz Navigators (Adam Ryland, Dan Sumner, Eric Siereveld, Pearson Cross) play jazz from 6-8 pm at the Flying Tiger. Joining the Navigators each week will be special guests. The last Tuesday of the each month is the "Jazz Jam," where jazz students and practitioners join the band on selected tunes.
