The Country Club at Frenchman’s Bend, Men’s Golf Association of Frenchman’s Bend Country Club and Forth Insurance present The Memorial Golf Tournament May 24-25.

This annual 36-hole tournament benefitting The Wellspring kicks off Friday, May 23 with a Calcutta at Frenchman’s Bend. The fun begins with a 6 p.m. social hour that includes a spectacular seafood buffet and silent auction with great prizes. The Calcutta will start at 7:30 p.m.

Poverty Point World Heritage Site will host a special presentation to explore ongoing archaeology with T.R. Kidder, Ph.D. and his team from Washington University in St. Louis.

The team is working to re-excavate portions of the earthworks on site to gain new insights into the indigenous peoples who created the largest earthen monuments for their time and place in North America. This presentation and discussion begins at 2:00 PM in the theater. The talk will last about 30 minutes. There will be a public discussion and Q and A session following the talk.

Dr. Kidder is an expert in the field of archaeology who has worked across the globe. He asks big questions about our ancestors and how we change the landscape, especially relating to climate and shifting environments. He began his fieldwork in North Louisiana in the early 1980s, and is still returning to help us re-discover the ancient world.

Poverty Point World Heritage Site offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience and learn about the earthworks and those individuals who raised them from the ground between the years of 1700 and 1100 BCE. The $4 admission fee provides access to the museum, film theatre, hiking trail, driving trail, tram tour, and interpretive events. Children (3 and under) and senior citizens (62 and over) are admitted free of charge.
